Instructions: Chose a song that you believe could be the soundtrack to your last finished book, or a character in your last finished book.
Book: Delirium by Lauren Oliver (review)
Soundtrack: Make you Feel my Love by Adele
Alternative Soundtrack: Can you Feel the Love Tonight by Elton John
Both songs have a strong meaning that pertains to this book, so I couldn’t choose just one.
Make You Feel My Love by Adele
When the rain is blowing in your face,
And the whole world is on your case,
I could offer you a warm embrace
To make you feel my love.
When the evening shadows and the stars appear,
And there is no one there to dry your tears,
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love.
I know you haven't made your mind up yet,
But I would never do you wrong.
I've known it from the moment that we met,
No doubt in my mind where you belong.
I'd go hungry; I'd go black and blue,
I'd go crawling down the avenue.
No, there's nothing that I wouldn't do
To make you feel my love.
The storms are raging on the rolling sea
And on the highway of regret.
Though winds of change are throwing wild and free,
You ain't seen nothing like me yet.
I could make you happy, make your dreams come true.
Nothing that I wouldn't do.
Go to the ends of the Earth for you,
To make you feel my love
This is probably more of a character soundtrack, from Alex’s point of view.
“I know you haven’t made your mind up yet, but I would never do you wrong. I’ve known it from the moment that we met, no doubt in my mind where you belong.”
He’s trying to show Lena that Love is real and it’s beautiful. Love is freedom.
“The storms are raging on the rolling sea, and on the highway of regret. Through winds of change are throwing wild and free, you ain’t seen nothing like me yet.”
Alex wants Lena to see that there are more like him (Wildlings/ Invalids) than she thinks, and that there will one day be an uprising. This lack of choice, lack of freedom, lack of love, is turning into war.
Can You Feel the Love Tonight by Elton John
There's a calm surrender to the rush of day
When the heat of a rolling wind can be turned away
An enchanted moment, and it sees me through
It's enough for this restless warrior just to be with you
And can you feel the love tonight
It is where we are
It's enough for this wide-eyed wanderer
That we got this far
And can you feel the love tonight
How it's laid to rest
It's enough to make kings and vagabonds
Believe the very best
There's a time for everyone if they only learn
That the twisting kaleidoscope moves us all in turn
There's a rhyme and reason to the wild outdoors
When the heart of this star-crossed voyager beats in time with yours
This seems to catch the overall theme of the book. Alex is the restless warrior, Lena is the wide-eyed wanderer and they are both star-crossed voyagers. Lena’s growing to realize that what she’s been brought up on, is a lie. Love is not a disease.
(p.s. I also love the line “There’s a rhyme and reason to the wild outdoors” as Lena learns about the dwellings in the Wild and that they may not be what everybody told her.)
